Apie mus

The Klaipėda City Municipality Ethno Culture Center is located in the Old Town of Klaipėda, at Daržų St. 10. The motto of the Klaipėda Ethnographic Culture Center is "Traditions and Culture for You!" This reflects our aim to engage people of all ages and social groups through traditional festivals, educational workshops, ethnic events, and other activities. Traditions and culture are a unique bond that connects the people of Klaipėda, generations, and families. Traditional culture is intangible heritage that everyone experiences differently, but the most important thing is that everyone is seeking it.

We have much to be proud of and celebrate: the history of the Fifth, the Minor Lithuania region, and the city of Klaipėda, with its distinctive folklore, customs, and unique national costumes.

Currently, the Klaipėda Ethnographic Culture Center employs 19 staff members and hosts 5 active folklore groups for both children and adults. The mission of the institution is to promote Lithuanian ethnic culture in the city of Klaipėda and to spread the traditions of this region both within Lithuania and abroad.

History

The Klaipėda City Municipality Ethnographic Culture Center was established on April 1, 1991. Its original location was a small half-timbered building in the Old Town at Vežėjų St. 4. The unique atmosphere of the historic building and its cozy courtyard quickly became one of the key cultural hubs of the port city. The creative team at the center encouraged locals to gather for calendar celebrations, revived and successfully maintained the region's traditional customs, and has been teaching the younger generation about these traditions and crafts.

In December 2007, at the initiative of the Klaipėda City Municipality, the Ethnographic Culture Center moved to new premises at Daržų St. 10. The two-story building, listed in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage of Klaipėda City, was restored as part of the Lithuania-Latvia project "Traditional Crafts and Arts Promoting Entrepreneurship and Tourism in the Baltic Sea Curonian Coast," along with additional funding from the municipality. Since then, the port city's ethnic culture events have been held in a cozy and much larger hall that accommodates nearly 150 visitors. An inner courtyard adjacent to the building hosts folklore evenings, children's celebrations, and other events during the warmer months.

The Klaipėda Ethnographic Culture Center currently employs 19 staff members and hosts 5 active folklore groups for children and adults. The institution's mission is to promote Lithuanian ethnic culture in Klaipėda and spread the traditions of this region both within Lithuania and abroad.
