Delmonas - a traditional accessory of women's clothing from the Klaipėda region, recognized in 2019 as a protected heritage item and included in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Lithuania.

Delmonas is a decorated textile bag worn at the waist by women of Lithuania Minor, nowadays recognised as a distinctive and mandatory element of the national costume of Lithuania Minor, having become a representative symbol of the region. In late 18th-early 20th century delmonai had a practical function in folk clothing – they were used to put small items in when working at home or when leaving the house. It is one of the most ornate details of the costume. In 2019, the tradition of making and wearing delmonai was inscribed on the Lithuanian Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory. Delmonas-making workshops, organised at Klaipėda Centre of Ethnic Culture, have been nominated as a good practice of intangible cultural heritage in the Nordic and Baltic countries by the Secretariat of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO.

In recent years, delmonai embroidery has been revived as a continuation of traditional handicrafts, they are made and worn not only with the national costume, but also with modern outfits.

An Exhibition of Master Antanas Butkus’ Musical Instruments

EXHIBITION OF MASTER ANTANAS BUTKUS’ MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Antanas Butkus – a researcher of historical musical instruments of Lithuania Minor – reconstructed the kanklės-harp of Lithuania Minor in 1984, relying on written sources, drawings, and experimental methods. The master instrument maker also revived other instruments once used by Prussian Lithuanians: the psalterium (psalter, psalterion), horn-trumpet, a rare type of drum, whistle, shepherd’s pipe, and the kanklės of Jokūbas Stikliorius.

The collection of Antanas Butkus’ instruments, uniquely displayed by Anatolijus and Romanas Klemencov, presents reconstructions of Lithuania Minor instruments based on engravings found in old manuscripts, newly created instruments by the master, as well as other instruments crafted or restored on the basis of museum exhibits.

This collection not only reflects the master’s meticulous craftsmanship but also embodies the living tradition of instrumental music-making in Lithuania Minor, which was inscribed into the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Lithuania in 2022.

The gallery is open to visitors from May to September.
